The recovery of a stolen firearm from the Officer Commanding Vihiga Police Station (OCS), reported missing on December 21, 2023, marks a significant breakthrough for law enforcement. The Directorate of Criminal Investigations (DCI) revealed that the OCS was ambushed while on duty, resulting in the theft of his loaded jericho pistol containing 15 rounds of ammunition.
The incident unfolded in Vihiga's Majengo market, where the Chief Inspector was accosted by a ruthless gang wielding daggers, leaving him severely injured. Subsequently, an operations team from the DCI initiated a pursuit of the suspects based on intelligence gathered.
An anonymous tip-off led detectives to Mwiki, Kasarani, where a suspicious car was spotted at the KU farm, occupied by three individuals matching the description of the suspects. Upon confrontation, the suspects engaged in a shootout with the DCI operations team, resulting in the death of one gang member and the neutralization of another who attempted to resist arrest.
Despite the successful apprehension of some suspects, two accomplices managed to evade capture, fleeing to a nearby shopping center. Law enforcement authorities are actively pursuing these fugitives to ensure they face justice for their involvement in the theft and subsequent criminal activities.
The impounding of a Nissan Note with registration number KBZ 985T, believed to have been used by the suspects during their criminal escapades, serves as crucial evidence in ongoing investigations. Additionally, the body of the deceased suspect has been taken to the City Mortuary pending identification, facilitating further inquiries into the gang's operations and network.
The swift and coordinated efforts of the DCI operations team demonstrate the commitment of law enforcement agencies to combatting crime and ensuring the safety and security of citizens. However, this incident also underscores the persistent challenges posed by criminal elements and the importance of ongoing vigilance and collaboration between law enforcement and communities to safeguard against such threats.
